On May 28th 2008 at Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks we celebrated the inauguration of our very own solar powered fountain and solar education display in the memorial rose garden on the north/west side of the campus quad. The photovoltaic system was designed and installed by the members of RESCUE using a portion of the 2007-2008 Energize the Mind by Design Solar grant from SMUD. All who attended had a great time admiring the fountain, enjoyed some refreshments, and were interviewed by a local news paper and TV station.
On May 10th 2008 our club set up a station at the Get WET Festival held near the Folsom dam. This festival is all about our water supplies and ecosystems, and what we can do to help keep our water clean and conserve this precious resource. As our club is all about renewable energy, we were displaying ways of using the sun to purify unsanitary water using a simple solar cooker that uses nothing but the sun's energy! The solar cooker directs the sun's rays to a dark colored bottle (covered in an oven bag for insulation) witch heats water until it is pasteurized.
On June 21st 2008 our club co-sponsored the "All Things Solar" event at the RossvilleUtilityExplorationCenter. To this event we brought our expertise in solar cooking, demonstrating about 20 cookers and providing solar cooked food to the people who attended as well as helping with a station where people go to build their own solar cook-its and PV electric displays showcasing our solar panels and electric motors. We also did a demonstration on solar powered fountains, installing a permanent solar powered fountain THAT day!
On May 16th 2009 our club once again set up a station at the Get WET Festival held near the Folsom dam. Along with our water pasteurization and usual solar electric displays we did a few new things this year. Much like at the "All Things Solar" event in 2008 we did a demonstration on solar powered fountains and we also converted an existing fountain to run off solar energy THAT day! What was really special about this event was that it was our first test run of our photovoltaic trailer and it preformed immaculately! We powered a variety of household appliances including a TV and 360 game console for children to play guitar hero on!
Once again RESC:UE went out to Roseville and co-sponsored the "All Things Solar"
event at the UtilityExplorationCenter.
We showed our photovoltaic trailer along with a full display of household devices that we use in our everyday lives. Our fountain from last year was still running great and even though attendance at this event was down from last year, we still talked with many people who were very interested in learning about solar power and its uses!
In July 2009 RESC:UE attended the California State Fair where we presented outside the Energy and Technology building. RESC:UE members talked to thousands of people about solar power and its many uses. We presented our PV trailer along with a wide variety of solar powered devices and toys. We even had solar powered rock band for the younger kids to explore the wonders of solar power.
RESC:UE has partnered with the Bella Vista Library and e-cycling to put on many E-Waste events where people in the Bella Vista
community can bring all of heir old electronics (including but not
limited to TVs, computers, monitors, and stereo) that they no longer need or want. So far we have hosted 3 of these E-Waste events and have saved over 40,000 LBs of electronic waste from being thrown away to end up in landfills.
